Jun has rich experience in the field of memory chips. Jun joined Samsung's semiconductor division in 2000 and helped the company develop basic DRAM and flash memory chips for smartphones and servers.
Kyung Kye-hyun, former head of Samsung's semiconductor division, will serve as head of Samsung's Advanced Technology Research Institute and future business teams.
The move comes as Samsung lags behind in a key growth area for memory chips. SK Hynix occupies a leading position in the field of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for artificial intelligence model training.
SK Hynix recently reported its fastest revenue growth since at least 2010. This has pushed SK Hynix's share price up 36% since the beginning of 2024, far outperforming Samsung's share price, which has barely changed.
SK Hynix is the world's largest storage provider for developing services similar to ChatGPT. Almost all of the company's chip production capacity next year is scheduled.
SK Hynix plans to spend approximately US$14.6 billion to build a new complex in South Korea to meet demand for HBM chips. The company has also established a $4 billion packaging facility in Indiana.
Samsung has also begun to expand globally, including investing $40 billion in U.S. chip manufacturing.
Samsung said it has begun mass production of its latest 8-layer HBM3E and plans to mass production of 12-layer HBM chips in the second quarter. The company expects its HBM supply to at least triple by 2024 compared to last year.
